I may not be able to afford Texas or any other place in the lower 48 for that matter.

Wow. I obviously didn't read the Neighborly News thread in the old forum enough. I thought Rob and Kez were planning on jumping ship and heading to the islands?

Yes, do consider Northern Cali, Rob! You can find some really great rural land for not too much (about the same price as moving to Utah), the natives are mostly super chill folks who are friendly and neighborly but like their privacy. If you go high enough north, you get enough snow to feel like you had a winter, but not enough to make you sick of the snow (*cough*Alaska*cough*). Tons of hiking, mostly national forests, summers aren't too hot, you get all 4 seasons.

Sure would be neat if we got enough of us peeps in that area to have a west coast gathering. :)

Touring around on G.E.  You know I get a good vibe. It's very different country. Seems dry and brown, but also has good energy from the places I've seen.  Ausitn is huge. I think we most deffinately will be visitng.

I've checked out Northern C.A. the same way and parts of New Mexico. Thus our plan to tour around for a few years and see what's, what. If it is meant to be doors will open.

There's always MAINE.  You know, the great Northeast !!!  :/    It would seem pretty darn mild compared to Alaska.

Rob, you and Kez are young enough to hit the road and take day labor if need be...or live off the royalties of your books...until you find your home.  I know that you'd be welcome in Wimberley for a month or more...just help out.  See if you like those places.

Not lately, Zinnia. -35°F, an inch of ice on the tree branches and power lines, thousands without power for weeks.

I had designs of moving up there because of the lower cost of land. Because of the temperature extremes, I am now thinking more along the lines of N. Carolina. Besides, I don't feel like wrestling with cordwood anymore. Coal maybe... Solar in the winter at that latitude would be iffy. I think the sun only gets 30-33° above the horizon during winter. Two seasons: Winter and Blackfly/construction season. I hear they like the snow up there though, as it fills in the potholes...
