Member Posts: 53 | We were recently given a couple miniature type goats. Aside from food water and shelter, what sort of regular care is there? Do they need to be wormed and vaccinated on some kind of schedule, or do I just keep an eye on them and take them to the vet if anything seems amiss?

They need to have their hooves trimmed about every 2 months. Worming can be dependent on a number of things. Some worm twice a year no matter what, others only worm when there are symptoms of worms or at times of high stress. My preferred method is doing fecal exams and treat accordingly. That reduces the chances of the worms becoming resistant to medications. There are also herbal wormers that you give weekly that don't have the milk withdrawal time of the chemical wormers.

An annual tetanus or cd&t vaccine is often highly recommended...

Joel Salatine uses Shakley's Basic H for deworming his cattle.

I do the goat CDT vaccine once a year, and worm twice a year. Feet are 'as needed'- if they have a lot of ground they can roam on, at least ours keep their feet 'walked off'. I've had 3 in almost 20 years of goats down here that needed trimming every few months, otherwise they seem to do fine. Up north when there was snow on the ground a lot of the time, they needed trimming more often. Goats are cool- congratulations!

How's your selenium in that area? What about copper?
