Matt, you won't get an argument here. There's a reason I support the ABCA when it comes to the Border Collie, and not the AKC.
The English Shepherd has been bred for centuries. It is not recognized by the AKC, but I believe it's been recognized by the UKC since the 20's. I could be wrong, not a farm collie expert. Just saying... There are "real" farm collies that have been bred to do what they do for centuries, and when these mutt registries pop up, their main aim is to make money. If they were concerned about preserving breeding "traits", they would be encouraging the breeding of the actual farm collie BREED, not encouraging people to crossbreed their mutts to try and re-create what is already there.
That would be like me breeding Basset Hounds to Border Collies, in the hopes of creating a short-legged herding dog, and then making my own breed registry for it, and allowing anyone to register their dogs with me, as long as they were mutts bred with the same things in mind that I was breeding for, and the owners paid me a registration fee... Rather than just buying a nice Corgi.
I am not saying that people should not try to create a new breed. That's how we got all the breeds we have now. But to try to reinvent the wheel and call it something else, just so you can lure people in and get their money, just doesn't sit well with me. Especially when it encourages creating a whole pile of unwanted mutts, of which we have enough of in the world.
But all those "Doodle", "Poo", and "hypo-allergenic" breeders started the trend, and everyone has watched them rake in the cash, so of course, it's going to be something others try to emulate.
