Yes, bitterly cold here at night. Not quite as bad as Bruce's (George) nighttime temps. Still, I have been bringing two yaks ( a calve and his mom) into the house for the last two nights and will do the same tonight (-26F or so). House is still standing, the two yaks are wonderful heat sources, smell wonderful and don't play with things or experiment like some others do, but they don't chase vermin like the dogs do. However, it has been so cold at night that I wouldn't even let the vermin out of the house on nights like this. Yeah, I'm that sick.

Chilly but not bitterly so here. Going to town to shop today and get out of the house (cabin fever - both kids and adults). Bad weather due here tomorrow but moves out in time for work next week. Happy New year to all.

Sunny and 70 here today. That's the way to start out the year And I 'think' I'm pretty well over the flu. But I'm still taking it easy another few days- this is the sort of crap that comes back on you if you try too much too soon. I hadn't been that sick in several years and don't wish to repeat it anytime soon.

Not sure why the old forums are gone, but was glad to get an invite to the new forum. I've had a lot going on so haven't come to the forums much. In late August I received a LinkedIn email about companies looking to hire people like me. I usually just delete them after taking a quick glance but this time I saw a job at Costco in Issaquah, WA and clicked the link to read the job description. I was rather stressed out at my current job and had been looking around locally but didn't have any real plans to move especially since I just refinanced my house. For some reason I fired off a resume for this job at Costco but had no expectations of even receiving a reply. A few days later I did get a reply from HR asking me some questions followed by a request for a phone interview. I thought I did okay on the phone interview but missed a few questions they asked. I didn't really know what to expect, so when I got an email/call from HR the next day requesting an on-site interview in Issaquah, I was very surprised. They set everything up (and paid for it) and I flew out the following Sunday for a Monday interview. Interview went decently and we talked way longer than it was scheduled. After the interview I drove around the area, went on I-90 East to Snoqualmie Falls and North Bend. The next day I was flying home and while I was waiting for a connection I got the call from HR saying they were working on an offer letter. Wow! I was amazed at how fast this was all happening. I accepted the offer, put my house on the market, had movers come on October 9, and started driving out on October 12. Drove from Cincinnati, OH through Indiana and Illinois to Waterloo, Iowa the first day. Second day was up through Iowa and Minnesota to Rapid City, SD. Third day was trough South Dakota to Butte, Montana. Fourth day was through Montana and Idaho into Washington. Really amazing trip. Mike and I are living in a townhouse rental until I buy a house here in the fall of 2014 when my lease is up. I am really sad that I don't have a garden this year but am going to do some container tomatoes and herbs at least. Houses are really expensive here compared to Ohio but Mike managed to find a job here pretty quick (starts Jan 6) so we should be ok. We've done a number of hikes, try to do 1 every weekend. We've done Little Si, Twin Falls, Cedar Butte, Rattlesnake Ledge, Iron Horse Trail, and probably more I'm forgetting. Living in North Bend in the middle of all the mountains is amazing. I'm not sure I would be able to function in Ohio after living here. I'm hoping to find something with a few acres here if I can find something affordable, that or rent here and buy land over the pass in Eastern Washington where things are cheaper. Still have my house in Cincinnati on the market but am contemplating renting it, only 15 year mortgage with a low payment. Anyway hope to be more active here but it's hard for me to read about gardening when I can't do it myself. tl;dr - I moved to North Bend, WA in October 2013 and started working for Costco.

Good to see you Jen. The old forums are gone simply because Neil wanted to retire from running the forums after 10 years. He wants to focus on other things on homestead.org and spend more time traveling with his wife. This here is a temporary site as several of us will be building a more permanent and feature rich site over the next week. The old forum went down with only a few days notice so the site you on now went up quick to use as a gathering spot and to try to minimize lost members.

Would love it if we didn't have a long driveway and I didn't have to remove it.

Jen don't give up the gardening just yet - you may find a like minded co-worker or two. Or spy a plot of land nearby that the owner would allow you to use.

Member Posts: 20 | Rain here turning to ice then snow later this afternoon. Guess it's better than wading mud. Nice yesterday so got 2 stalls cleaned. Barn horses snuggled down. Luckily I had hauled in a roll of hay for the outside herd. Looking like a day to stay in and maybe do a little cooking
