I'll use this thread to keep us all apraised as to the status of the new, permannent, forum.

As of this posted, the domain 'homesteadforum.org' has been registered and it's currently parked until Karen (MagiAwen) can setup my server.

Most of the work will be completed during the day and afternoon tomorrow.  If DNS propogates quickly, the new site could be up before the old site goes down.

Cost for the new domain is $20/year.  $13 for the domain and $7 for domain privicy.

Server hosting through Karens company will be $30/mo with a one time $45 setup fee.  I should be able to cover all of this.  However, Karen will be coding a donation button for the new forum to allow for safe, and tracked, donations if there comes a time when I need it.  I think it will be locked at $5 maximum as I really don't want people contributing more than this.

If anyone has suggestions for the new site, I'd love to hear them.  We will be using phpBB.  phpBB is one of the most widely used forum software packages available.  It is completely opensource and infinitely customizable.

We appreciate all the effort Tobit.

I don't think it's fair to you for you to have to personally take the whole burden for the cost, but thanks for doing it.  We should get the donate button up and running as soon as possible. Even I can pitch in a few dollars here and there.

The efforts of those attempting to establish a new forum on such short notice are appreciated.

I'm glad HT+ will continue - not many other places for us.

So far this forum seems to operate quite nicely - I'm sure as we get more registered members and threads become populated any problems will make themselves known.

Hopefully another forum is built and running and waiting for us by then.

In the mean time, I say we put this one through its paces.

".....Hi Max!!!!!  I am happy to see you again!...."

I appreciate the welcome.  I have not gotten many of them lately.

I guess this new forum is a temporary messure until the "real" new forum is up.

Concerning that, I assume someone will eventually direct me to the promised "donation button."

I will be happy to donate.

Despite the fact that I will not be able to deduct the donations on my income tax return as a business expense, like the  management of the previous forum was able to.

Cheers.

Max

Max, good to see you here especially after Neil gave you the boot.

Yes, this is a temporary forum as it is not as full featured and I have questions about bandwidth and storage space for photos and other attachments.  I'd really like to see the forum grow and attract more members in 2014, the old forum seemed a bit stagnet of late with new people not posting.  Therefore, I'd really like to see a professional looking and running forum and why I have no problem funding it out of pocket with a few donations from y'all as needed.

Well, after (3) years of re-clearing land (essentially by hand) that had prevously been cleared a decade earlier, I have a lot to say on that particular subject.  I kept the thread on that subject going for 2 1/2 years over on the old, old forum, but it all went away with the change over last June.  For the last month or so I been working (sporadically) on a nice, long write-up (with plenty of photos) on the subject, which I had originally intended to submit to a particular homestead website, but if the new forum has room for such things I would be happy to finish it up and post it there, for free of course.

Perhaps others would do the same on other subject matter.

The new forum will allow us to have better backup and recovery strategies.  I will also be using phpBB which features open standards unlike the proprietary forum software previously run on homestead.org.

Looking foward to reading what you are working on.

"...I will also be using phpBB which features open standards ..."

I have no clue what that means.

Sounds good, though...

Do we have any graphic artists on the forum who can create a header image for the new forum? I have several ideas.

Final, confirmed, team for the new forum:

Admins: Tobit and MagiAwen

Mods: lunamother (senior mod) with Slaeghunder, AlaskaRob, and Kezzie

"..lunamother (senior mod) ..."

You might want to think about changing that title-  makes her sound old  :)

Maybe, "Primary Moderator."?   "Lead Moderator"?

I like the simplicity of this forum...seems to go hand in hand with simple living.

While simple, many things are a pain in the ass.

Double return to set a blank space, no easy way to view new posts.  Cannot edit quotes.  Several other things.
